Apple has announced the PhD Fellowships in AI/ML 2025 programme. The PhD fellowship in AI/ML was created as part of the Apple Scholars program to support the work of outstanding PhD students from around the world, who are pursuing cutting edge research in machine learning and artificial intelligence under the following themes:
- Privacy preserving machine learning
- Human centred AI
- AI for ethics and fairness
- AI for accessibility
- AI for health and wellness
- ML theory
- ML algorithms and architectures
- Embodied ML
- Speech and natural language
- Computer vision
- Information retrieval, ranking and knowledge
- Data-centric AI
What is included?
The fellowship award comprises a generous monetary gift, mentorship, and potential internship opportunities (subject to student status and relevant employment law). All monetary gifts are directed towards the nominating university and disbursed annually at the beginning of each academic year, and are conditional upon the Scholar’s full time enrolment in their program. The award of the Apple Scholar in AI/ML PhD fellowship does not represent an employer/ employee relationship between Apple and the receiving university and/or selected student.
Who is eligible to apply?
- This award is NOT open to incoming students (beginning Michaelmas 2024) and is NOT a full PhD studentship.
- Registered as a full-time PhD student for the entirety of the 2025-26 academic year
- Entering final 2-3 years of study (i.e. beginning 2nd/3rd year of the PhD) in Michaelmas Term 2025
- Not holding an equivalent industry-sponsored full fellowship while they are an Apple Scholar in AI/ML
Internal selection process:
This call will be run as a restricted call, as institutions can nominate up to three students for this fellowship. The internal selection process will be managed by the School of Technology, as delegated by the University’s Research Policy Committee.
We hope to notify all applicants of the outcome by Friday 2 August 2024. The three students selected as nominees will then be invited to complete a full application by 3 September 2024.
How to apply
- Read the attached nomination guidelines before applying to the internal selection process. These guidelines should not be circulated outside the University. The password is: 2025applescholars (all lower case). Please note that some of the years are incorrect in the pdf guidelines; Apple have confirmed that the years stated in this email & the outline application form are correct.
- Students should apply directly to the School by Sunday 14 July 2024 by completing the outline application form (Raven login required). The form will automatically close at 08:00 on Monday 15 July and applications after this time will not be accepted. Each application must include the following documents, preferably combined into a single pdf:
- Completed summary sheet (attached; or download from https://www.tech.cam.ac.uk/apple-google-phd-fellowships)
- CV including publications (no photo or date of birth)
- 1 page research proposal
- Brief statement of why you are applying and the expected impact of the fellowship on your career (max. 1 page)
- Ask your PhD supervisor to submit an online reference for you via the supervisor reference form. This must be received by 08:00 on Monday 15 July. Applications without a corresponding reference will be not be accepted; it is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure references are received in time. If your PhD supervisor is on leave during this time, you may request a reference from your Adviser instead.

NB students are permitted to apply for both the Apple PhD Fellowship in AI/ML and the Google PhD Fellowship, circulated separately at the same time. A separate application must be submitted for each scheme.
