The role of calcification in intervertebral disc herniation is poorly understood. We are shedding new light on this process through use of Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance, with the goal of elucidating a more precise association with intervertebral disc disease in both dogs and humans, as well as a better understanding of the pathway of calcification. Our ultimate aim is to develop a mechanism to interfere with or stop the process of calcification and which should lead to a reduction in the incidence of disease.
