The Interventional Neuropsychiatry Group spans across Cambridge and Shanghai. Valerie is a Professor of Neuropsychiatry and Neuromodulation in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge and a Distinguished Professor at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Why do we repeat behaviours that we know are bad for us? Or make impulsive poorly considered risky decisions? These decision making processes are relevant in our daily lives and can be hijacked in disorders of pathology. The group is anchored on understanding mechanisms underlying human self-control and compulsivity and the influence of emotion and incentives. We focus on disorders of addictions and compulsive disorders. The lab identifies modifiable anatomical and functional objective physiological biomarkers for invasive and non-invasive neuromodulation with the ultimate aim to optimise neuromodulation approaches. The group is highly translational developing novel therapeutic paradigms based on targeting, stimulation and real-time adaptive and training approaches. Valerie is leading a Medical Research Council multicentre UK study on deep brain stimulation for addictions. We use multiple modalities including imaging, physiology, pharmacological challenges, cognitive neuroscience and computational modelling approaches.
