Place your votes: votes for BNA council and committee elections

I have decided to apply for a committee position on the British Neuroscience Association – The Local Groups Coordinator sits on the BNA’s National Council. The Council is the main governing body of the BNA and includes the Trustees/Directors of the Association. The role holder will be responsible for representing Local Groups, supporting Local Group Representatives to engage their local communities and facilitating a two way communication between the BNA Council and our members.

If you feel that I would be a good fit for the role, I would be grateful if you would consider giving me your vote (BNA login required) if you are a member of the BNA. I feel my experience in my role in Cambridge Neuroscience and my previous roles on FENS committees will benefit me in this role. Voting closes on August 14th.

I like the bigger picture, an holistic approach, and I like people – during my research career, it came to a point when I felt I could make more of an impact orchestrating the different pieces rather than focusing on one specific area of research. I get to work with amazing scientists and help their work fit into the wider research context. I feel I could bring this experience of bringing people together to the role of Local Group Coordinator. The network was invaluable to me in my career, giving me support, guidance, a network beyond my University and friends for life.

At times, it is difficult to engage others as everyone is so busy, but I think diplomacy and a willingness to work with others and respect their views is essential. I work with a lot of different personalities and often it is important to engage in a professional yet friendly manner and always be willing to listen. I have been lucky enough to work with some incredible people over the last 24 years in neuroscience within the global neuroscience community – BNA has been a large part of this.

I like people and I really feel more heads are better than one. Getting a different insight into a problem, be it from a fellow scientist, a member of the public, a student – it can make all the difference and result in a mutual learning experience. Speaking to certain people, be it in meeting, or over a coffee can inspire me and ignite ideas that until then remained dormant. It goes back to the bigger picture ideal – no one person can solve all the problems by themselves. I would like to think I could bring this energy to the role of Local Group Coordinator to ensure that this valuable network is greater than the sum of its parts.”
