Restricted Call: Google PhD Fellowships 2024 (Internal deadline: Sunday 23 July 2023)

Google will soon open nominations for the 2024 programme of Google PhD Fellowships, awarded to full-time graduate students pursuing a PhD who represent the future of research in the following fields:

• Algorithms, optimizations and markets
• Computational neural and cognitive sciences
• Health research
• Human-Computer interaction
• Machine learning
• Machine perception, speech technology and computer vision
• Mobile computing
• Natural language processing (including Information Retrieval and Extraction)
• Privacy and Security
• Programming Languages and Software Engineering
• Quantum computing
• Recommender systems
• Structured data and database management
• Systems and networking

What is included?

Students receive named Fellowships of up to 3 years, which include a monetary award. The funds are given directly to the university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate. In addition, the student will be matched with a Google Research Mentor. There is no employee relationship between the student and Google as a result of receiving the fellowship. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If students wish to apply for a job at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

Who is eligible?

• Candidates must remain enrolled full-time in their PhD programme for the duration of the Fellowship
• Candidates must be nominated by their host university (they cannot apply directly)
• Expect to have completed first-year assessment by Michaelmas Term 2024
• Not supported by a comparable industry award (Government and non-profit organisation funding are exempt)
• Not a Google employee, nor the student’s spouse / children / members of their household

Internal selection process:

This call will be run as a restricted call, as?institutions can nominate up to three students for this fellowship. The internal selection process will be managed by the School of Technology, as delegated by the University’s Research Policy Committee.

Students should apply directly to the School by Sunday 23 July 2023 by completing the outline application form (Raven login required). The form will automatically close at 08:00 on Monday 24 July and applications after this time will not be accepted. Each application must include the following documents, preferably combined into a single pdf:

• CV including publications (no photo or date of birth)
• 1 page research proposal
• Brief statement of why you are applying and the expected impact of the fellowship on your career?(max. 1 page)
• Brief statement from the Department (Graduate Office, PhD supervisor, Director of Education or any other appropriate member of staff) to verify that the student is eligible and the Department are happy to support their application. Departments should please use the attached checklist to ensure that all the letter includes all necessary declarations.

We hope to notify all applicants of the outcome by Friday 11 August 2023. Those students nominated to be put forward to the funder will then be invited to complete a full application over the following weeks.

Funder deadline: TBC, early autumn 2023

NB students are permitted to apply for both the Google PhD Fellowship, and the Apple PhD Fellowship in AI/ML, circulated separately. A separate application must be submitted for each scheme.
