Restricted Call: Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships (internal deadline: 17th October, 2022)

The Leverhulme Trust has announced the Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships. 10 awards of £1.95M each will be made to UK universities to fund up to 18 Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships.

Each award funds the following:

Applications to the scheme will be accepted from a maximum of 2 universities.

The awards are offered in a subject area or thematic area that applicant universities have identified as a research priority. The chosen area should be sufficiently broad to sustain up to 18 doctoral students over the period of the grant, but it should also have a clear and coherent overarching thematic identity. A list of previously funded Leverhulme Doctoral Studentships from 2014, 2017 and 2020 can be found here.

When selecting the topic for the application, please also refer to this guidance from the Trust: The proposals that are seen are less suited for the Leverhulme Trust are those that support the “continuing activity” and proposals from established groups working on subjects, areas and themes where the Research Councils have a significant interest. The Trust is keen to avoid assuming the role of ‘funder of last resort’; that is, of routinely providing support for proposals which have been fully matched to the requirement of another funding agency, but have failed to win support on the grounds of either lack of quality or insufficient available funds (‘unfunded alphas’). The webpage Our approach to grant-making outlines Leverhulme Trust particular areas of interest and key general criteria they use in assessing proposals. Please also refer to the research areas the Trust will not fund on their website.

University Internal selection process:

The University of Cambridge may only submit one (1) application as a lead institution. Therefore, an internal selection process will be set up according to the University’s Restricted Calls policy. The internal selection process will include application review followed by the interviews with selected applicants. It is expected that the outcome of the internal selection will be announced in November 2022.

The researchers interested in leading on an application should submit the attached internal selection form accompanied by a support statement from the Head of Institution where the Doctoral Training Scholarships will be hosted to researchstrategy@admin.cam.ac.uk by 17th October 2022.
