Policy Workshop Report: Stress and School Environment

In June 2023, CSaP organised a Policy Workshop in partnership with the Cambridge Neuroscience Interdisciplinary Research Centre and the Department for Education (DfE). The workshop addressed the following overarching question: How does stress in the school environment affects development and learning?

The purpose of the workshop was:

• present the latest scientific evidence on determinants and impact of stress in children and adolescents in connection to the current school environments;
• explore policy implications of this scientific evidence;
• discuss evidence-informed approaches to managing stress in children and adolescents, including mental and physical health, economic disadvantage, inclusion and SEND, impacts on attainment, and the influence of school climates and cultures.

A number of Cambridge Neuroscientists were involved: Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, Sally Hogg, Dr Sharon Neufeld, Professor Michelle Ellefson, Dr Sarah Lloyd Fox, Professor Gordon Harold, Emily Towner, Professor Pasco Fearon and Dr Dervila Glynn.
