The UKRI has announced the Turing Artificial Intelligence World-Leading Researcher Fellowships: Round 2.
EPSRC, on behalf of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), is delivering this substantive phase of the Turing Artificial Intelligence (AI) Fellowships, working in partnership with the Alan Turing Institute, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Office for Artificial Intelligence. This scheme is aimed at established researchers conducting research into AI at a fundamental or theoretical level working at the interface between AI and another discipline. This could be achieved, for example, by developing novel AI methodologies that address the fundamental, theoretical or mathematical challenges in AI the challenges present in other disciplines or sectors (please note that these are only examples and not an exhaustive list). Proposals based on applying current AI methods to an application area will not be accepted. To read more about the expectations for Turing AI World-Leading Researchers, please consult the “What we’re looking for” and “What we expect of you” sections of the call page.
EPSRC will fund five-year projects between £3-5m each (funded at 80% fec). Please discuss costing queries with your Departmental Research Grants Team and the Research Development Team at the Research Operations Office. This round will run in two stages, with the outline stage now open and closing 14th July 2022, and the full stage, which is by invitation only, opening in September and closing in November 2022 (dates for the full stage TBC by EPSRC). There are no standardised eligibility criteria for this fellowship due to the diversity of career paths in AI. For the list of winners from the first round of this scheme, including Professor Zoubin Ghahramani, University of Cambridge, please see here.
Please note that UKRI will hold a webinar on 6th May 2022 (exact date and time TBC) to provide more information about this funding opportunity. Please check the call website for more information.
