Research in our group is focused on the understanding of inflammation in central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Over the past years, our research in regenerative neuroimmunology led to novel experimental advanced therapeutics with neural stem cells, acellular therapeutics (e.g., extracellular vesicles), and small molecules for the treatment of ischemic stroke, spinal cord injury, and progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). Our most recent work is focusing on cellular metabolism and mitochondria to find novel ways to modulate chronic inflammation and favour CNS regeneration. To this aim, we apply unique tools to model metabolic/mitochondrial dysfunctions in vitro (using human cells and gene editing techniques) and in vivo (with animal disease models), as well as cutting edge techniques to detect metabolic changes in rodent/human cells and tissues.
